Uganda Tin Producer H5 Resources Wins Responsible Mining and Environmental Stewardship Award
Kampala, Uganda — October 2, 2026 — H5 Resources, a Uganda-based tin producer rebuilding the historic Mwerasandu mine through modern engineering, open operational data, and applied AI, has won the Responsible Mining and Environmental Stewardship Award for 2026 at the 15th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference in Kampala. The company was also named runner-up for Community Impact and Local Content.
The Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals presented both on the evening of Wednesday 30 September at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The Chamber organises the conference in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, which nominated H5 Resources for the stewardship award. Fiona Ntoreine, Director of Administration at H5 Resources, received both trophies on behalf of the company.
“Ugandans worked this ground by hand for generations. Today Ugandans run it with engineers, data and care for the environment. I am proud to be one of them,”

At Mwerasandu the environmental approach was part of the plan before the plant was built. Tin is separated from the ore by gravity alone, on jigs, spirals and shaking tables, with nothing but water and physics: no process chemicals and no reagents. The plant draws its power from Uganda's national grid, which is about 95% renewable according to the Electricity Regulatory Authority, with over 90% of the country's electricity generated by water.
The same thinking applies to the people around the mine and to the country it works in. H5 Resources hires from the villages around Mwerasandu, in Ntungamo District, south-western Uganda, and former artisanal miners now work and train at the mine. Its concentrate is smelted in Uganda into tin metal of at least 99.85% purity before it is exported, so the value added stays in the country. The company operates its Ugandan-licensed chain-of-custody system under the ICGLR framework, aligned with OECD due-diligence guidance.
“We planned this mine to be responsible from the ground up, not to be made responsible later. That is the work of everyone at Mwerasandu and in our Kampala office, and this award belongs to them. A social licence is earned every day, so the award is also a standard we now have to keep. And there is much more to come: we have a full pipeline of environmental and community projects ahead of us,”
